Themes of identity, home, belonging, care & safety run through the work of Permindar Kaur, subjects which are ever important & especially relevant in the current socio-political landscape.
Kaur’s work speaks to a wide section of society, all the different communities of people in transit or who migrate to make either temporary or permanent homes, groups that include many of us at one time or another. Through these explorations, Kaur connects sculpture to broader societal conversations, making her work both accessible & relevant to current critical cultural discussion. Nothing is Fixed focuses on the intersectionality of identity; how society, family & education inform unique combinations of discrimination & privilege. Kaur’s use of materials builds on the influence of Pop Art or contemporary traditions, where medium challenges the form, such as in the work of Claus Oldenburg & Eva Hesse, while the work of artists such as Mike Kelley informs her use of soft materials – with menacing undertones. Specific materials used are given further weight by narratives affected by heritage & stories of personal experience.
This publication opens up new conversations around Kaur’s practice and her show of the same title, & includes an essay from Katherine Stout, a conversation between Kaur & Dorothy Price, an introduction by Nadia Thondrayen & a foreword by Ros Carter.
