Magiciens de la Terre literally translates to "Magicians of the World." In 1989, in the wake of the infamous "Primitivism" show at MOMA, curator Jean-Hubert Martin set out to create a show that counteracted ethnocentric practices within the contemporary art world as a replacement for the format of the traditional Paris Biennial. This exhibition sought to correct the problem of "one hundred percent of exhibitions ignoring 80 percent of the earth." Co-published by the Editions Centre Pompidou and the Editions Xavier Barral, this publication traces the origins of Les Magiciens de la Terre, while looking ahead to the prospects through the writings of sociologists, historians, curators and art critics. With the inputs of many artists who took part to the show and exclusive pictures, readers can dive into the 1989 exhibition rooms. This book falls under a series that begun in 2010, with publications on the exhibitions "Dada" and "Daniel Buren. Le musée qui n'existait pas". Under the direction of Annie Cohen-Solal, and with the help of Jean-Hubert Martin. Text in French
