Future People's Palaces: Remaking the Architecture of the Welfare State

The mass housing produced during the Swedish welfare state's "Million Programme" (1965-1974) has been heavily debated since the Swedish society's abrupt shift during the oil crises of the 1970s. 'Future People's Palaces' provides an overview of this history and presents architectural projects that take on the complexities of renovating those buildings now. In part the challenges are technical, in part they are social and in large part they concern how these projects live in the collective consciousness through their mediation.
