Chika Higashi started Coci la elle in 2010, a Tokyo-based shop for handmade parasols that are painted or decorated with embroidery, and with no two alike. The brand name is a nuanced reference to the Japanese term 'koshiraeru', meaning "to make". The rich expressions of these delicately crafted umbrellas can bring a splash of colour into any day - startling, pretty, and at times with a pinch of humour. Coci la elle has since branched out to include original print umbrellas, scarves, and accessories. Filled with beautiful photos, sketches, and inspirational mood boards, this book shows Higashi's work yet is also a tribute to artisan umbrella makers, a skilled craft that is slowly disappearing.
