Published with an exhibition of work by Walter Crane at the Museum of Modern Art in Shiga, this book offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s legacy. Active in England in the latter half of the 19th century, Crane was key in laying the groundwork for modern picture books. Working together with Edmund Evans, an engraver and printer who developed techniques to produce multicolour wood engravings, Crane created the first toy book with illustrations completely printed in colour in 1865. The exhibition focuses on his book designs and illustrations, with around 140 works representing almost all of his own books and the major volumes for which he produced illustrations.
