Sterling Ruby - Drftrs

Sterling Ruby’s DRFTRS series is an evolving body of work that reflects the artist’s intense relationship with materials and his interest in issues such as sociocultural evolution, popular culture, and violence. Executed on paper, these hybrid collages comprise cut-and-pasted images on expressionistic landscapes. The colourfully painted backdrops veer from dense and apocalyptic to sparse and vibrant. Combined with photographic images of ancient artefacts, snakeskins, prisons, orchids, and more, visual and conceptual links create a psychological tension that expresses the medium’s transgressive nature. Analytical and emotive, an exercise in social dissection.
