This major exhibition brought together a selection of large-scale paintings by Agnes Martin alongside masterwork Navajo Chief Wearing Blankets. The first of its kind, the exhibition narrates parallels between the exquisite design and craftsmanship of the blankets created by Navajo women throughout the 19th century and Martin's approach to painting, both of which prize the power of balance and inspire a transcendental experience. Published on the occasion of this bicoastal exhibition, (shown at both Pace's Palo Alto & New York galleries), this is the first catalogue exploring the aesthetic resonance between classic textiles of the Navajos and the work of Agnes Martin. It features a conversation between art historian and writer Nancy Princenthal, author of Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art (2015), and Ann Lane Hedlund, cultural anthropologist and an expert in Navajo weaving, along with captivating side by side images of both bodies of work.
