Kenbu - A Performing Art Shaped By Samurai Aesthetics

The Japanese classical performing art known as kenbu refers to interpretive dance with a sword or fan accompanied by shigin - recitals of poetry with traditional music. It is supposed to have originated from performances by young samurai in the late Edo period, who were concerned about Japan's future and therefore took to the stage while wielding their swords. Kenbu rapidly became popular and spread throughout Japan in the late 19th century. It can be understood as a performing art that has preserved the samurai spirit and culture up to the present day.
