A chance discovery at a flea market in the 1970s led to the genesis of a unique collection that now boasts more than 500,000 photographs. Today, Ruther and Peter Herzog are among the most important collectors of photographs worldwide. This is the first comprehensive portrait of their diverse collection, which has been conserved and appraised at the Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron Kabinett in Basel since 2015. The book features around 300 selections, through which it presents a number of thematic focal points, as well as critical texts that address photography topics such as its tense relationship with art and the connection between it and historiography.
