Daido Moriyama - Record 42

In this instalment of his 'Record' series, Daido Moriyama reflects on his beginnings as a photographer, when he worked as an assistant at the Iwamiya Photos studio in Osaka. A mere youth at the time, he had yet to develop a feeling for cameras, but he borrowed one from the studio anyway and went to photograph the streets of Kyoto, where he used to live. Years later, when Moriyama had just moved to Tokyo, he spent nights roaming the streets of Shinjuku, snapping pictures of couples. The sight of these "Tokyo lovers" must have been cause for envy and jealousy for the young man from Osaka, considering how progressive this kind of behaviour was at that time.
