Roger Ballen

Roger Ballen is one of the most important and influential art photographers today. He is best known for his probing, often challenging images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation, and photography. Through the 1990s he developed a style he describes as "documentary fiction", and after 2000 the people he discovered and documented living on the margins of South African society increasingly became a cast of actors in his signature aesthetic. This book presents a wealth of the strange and extreme images he makes, confronting the viewer and challenging them to accompany him on a journey into their own minds as he explores the deeper recesses of his own.
