Gerard Garouste, born in 1964, is one of the most important contemporary French painters and an uncompromising proponent of figuration. Drawing from mythology, literature, biblical texts and Talmudic studies, his paintings relentlessly ask questions and unsettle the viewer, like a game whose rules are perpetually reinvented. The retrospective organised by the Centre Pompidou offers a unique and a deep insight into the unclassifiable career of Gerard Garouste, the "restless man". Structured by the room texts of the exhibition, it presents a set of major works analysed by a notice and supplemented with quotations.
