This book was published on the occasion of Alex Israel: Freeway at Fosun Foundation, Shanghai, the artist’s first museum-scale presentation in China. Curated by Jeffrey Deitch, the in-depth survey featured painting, sculpture, and multimedia works and installations from the last decade, and was the first time works from the Self-Portrait and Sky Backdrop series were shown in the country.
Documenting Israel’s interpretations of Los Angeles iconography such as sunsets, waves, and architecture, the bilingual (English/Chinese) publication reproduces the exhibited works in full color and includes detail views and installation photography. The custom metal license plate inset within the book’s cover references the exhibition title and Israel’s primary source of inspiration: driving around Los Angeles. Essays by Deitch, Sean Monahan, and the artist are presented alongside a conversation between Israel and Jenny Wang Jinyuan.
