This book, following the exhibition which put the spotlight on the new generation of Chinese artists, explores the artworks of 21 artists from the contemporary Chinese scene. The exhibition, with a multidisciplinary approach, offers the French and international public a fresh look on the new artistic Chinese scene : it lets us discover the Balinghou generation, Chinese artists born between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, exploring their link to the global artistic ecosystem and their desire to express themselves through a large variety of media. The Chinese character 目 (mu), meaning 'eye', evokes both the gaze and its ability to give shape to reality. An essential element of Chinese writing, it is used in the composition of a large number of sinograms, and in this current context reflects on a generation of Chinese artists. These artists, who grew up in an environment that was shifting towards an urbanised consumer society open to the outside world, explore their links to a rich and complex history as well as their place in a constantly changing world.
