American Photography

Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has become deeply embedded in American society. No other country showcases the medium as widely, visibly, or influentially. 'American Photography' captures this union through over 280 images, portraying life through the lenses of renowned practitioners such as Andres Serrano, Nan Goldin, Dawoud Bey, Diane Arbus, Carleton Watkins, and Paul Strand. However, it also ventures beyond the classical canon to feature many lesser-known images ranging from early advertising photographs to snapshots intended for private use. The book is published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at the Rijksmuseum.
