Tanja Smit (1961, NL) is a visual artist with a fascination for language and music. She studied painting and drawing at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and expanded her practice through the years with textscapes, photography, sound performance and video. Her work is included in the collections of Museum Gouda, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, the MACBA Museum in Barcelona and numerous public and private collections in the Netherlands and abroad. The Atlas of Textscapes offers an overview of text drawings from a forty-year period by Tanja Smit, created directly on magazine articles and newspaper pages. The result is a collection of surprising patterns and a broad investigation into layout, words, language and content. A critical investigation that is simultaneously an ode to language, slowness and the rapidly disappearing printed matter from our society.
