Down Under: The Curious Fall of a Child Who Knew Nothing and Became Everything is a picture book by design studio Formafantasma that blends fiction and scientific research to foster ecological awareness in both children and adults. Commissioned by C-mine to explore Belgium's postindustrial landscapes, the book examines the complex ties between humans, the environment, and other lifeforms. Divided into two parts, it opens with an illustrated story by Clement Vuillier about a child's journey through the Earth's layers, encountering organisms that reshape his worldview. The second part features reflections from scientists and educators-including a critical essay by Teresa Castro and interviews conducted by Formafantasma-challenging anthropocentric perspectives. Inspired by the educational ethos of Enzo Mari and Bruno Munari, the book invites readers to rethink extractivist narratives and imagine more interconnected, regenerative futures.
