Alexandra Bircken - SomaSemaSoma

This publication offers backstage access to one of the most compelling artistic outputs exploring the boundary between the human body and the machine. Alexandra Bircken combines a variety of materials and techniques with which she explores the boundary between the human and the created environment. At the same time, the Berlin-based artist dissects everyday technical objects with surgical precision, bringing the biomorphic nature of machines into view. This dual approach leads to an ambivalent work that is both cyborg-like and androgynous and questions human behaviour and desire. This book brings together Bircken's work from the past twenty years, along with an in-depth interview with the artist and a selection of reference and archive images collected over three decades.
