A spectacular look at Vanessa Beecroft's "tableaux vivants" – the performances with partly naked models for which she achieved worldwide fame
The tableau shows a number of women who are naked or wearing the same, mostly beige or skin-coloured garments, and dyed wigs or hair. They are positioned in grids or other formations which gradually begin to dissolve into informal chaos on the floor. In long photo series, the book offers spectacular insights into her often monumental choreographies in museums, opera houses and concept spaces, accompanied exclusively by old interviews in which Beecroft talks about the concept, preferences, inspirations, organisation and execution of her installations. The scholarly appendix is limited to detailed image captions, short biographies, and a list of exhibitions.
Edited by Chris Kraus, with text by Vanessa Beecroft in conversation with Chris Kraus, Miltos Manetas, Jeffrey Deitch, Donatien Grau, Hamza Walker, Stacey McKenzie, Vanessa Place.
