Aki Sasamoto's Life Laboratory

Accompanying the first mid-career retrospective for Aki Sasamoto, this book introduces her oeuvre and explores the evolution of her themes and methods over two decades. From performance and dance to installations and video, Sasamoto combines and crosses media freely. She is best known for improvisational performances inside custom-built spaces with sculptures and devices she prepares herself. Her later work also incorporates observations of the weather and natural ecosystems into her narratives. More than just tools for accentuating these narratives, her elaborately crafted sculptures become scores prompting unexpected turns in her improvisational performances.
