Born in Switzerland, Warja Lavater moved between literature and art, crossing between graphic design, painting, and object making. At times describing herself as an "image maker", she developed her own visual language and became a pioneer of book art. After moving to New York, Lavater realised that signs could function as an international language and developed her distinctive pictographic language. At the end of the 1960s she began collaborating with the Parisian publisher Adrien Maeght. At the same time, she realised several important public commissions. 'Passion and Reason', authored by Cornelia Hesse-Honegger, retraces the artist's life and work.
