From Kiyochika to Hasui: Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga - Woodblock Prints

Kobayashi Kiyochika has been called one of the last 'ukiyo-e' artists, and his depiction of light in expressive dusk scenes marked a major shift in Meiji period landscape prints. But 'ukiyo-e' prints would soon enter a decline as new technologies and media - such as photography and newspapers - emerged. However, a subsequent revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques resulted in 'shin-hanga' ("new prints") made by artists such as Kawase Hasui, which received great acclaim - particularly in the West. This exhibition catalogue brings together Japanese modern prints from one of the world's largest collections, assembled by Robert Otto Muller (1911-2003).
