Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) excelled at painting anything and everything, from human figures and erotica ('shunga') to deities and monsters - but despite his extraordinarily varied output, he was arguably at his very best when depicting animals. A cat lover who also kept monkeys, insects, and various other creatures, his sharp eye and ready wit translated into images combining fidelity to an animal's true essence with cutting social satire. His lifelike creatures seem to romp over the page, drawing spectators into their world.
